If I had to pick a favorite frosting, this would be the one. Cream cheese icing is one that pairs happily with so many cakes and cookies and rolls, so I love the versatility. And though I love to use this recipe year round, I do feel like it fits so perfectly with autumn and all the flavors in this season.
This really is the most perfect cream cheese frosting. I first created this recipe (and since tweaked it), when making an anniversary cake for my parents more than decade ago. It was an Italian cream cake and honestly is my favorite way to enjoy this easy cream cheese frosting recipe. It’s heavy on the cream cheese which I love. That tangy cream cheese is the perfect complement that marries so beautifully with the tastes it is normally paired with… pumpkin and apple and cinnamon. Such a simple recipe that has so many BFF’s!

Why You Will Love This Recipe:
- Creamy and smooth: Full-fat cream cheese and butter create a rich, silky frosting that spreads beautifully.
- Perfectly balanced: The tanginess of the cream cheese balances the sweetness of the powdered sugar.
- Light and fluffy: A few extra minutes of whipping gives the frosting a soft, airy texture.
- Easy to make: This recipe comes together quickly with just a handful of basic ingredients.
- Versatile: Use it on cakes, cupcakes, cookies, cinnamon rolls, muffins, and more.
- Easy to customize: Add a little extra vanilla, cinnamon, or your favorite flavoring to make it your own. And easy to make a double batch!
- Great for decorating: The frosting is thick enough to spread, swirl, or pipe onto your favorite baked goods.
Ingredients:
- 8 ounces full-fat cream cheese, room temperature (½ block) — Use full-fat cream cheese for the richest flavor and creamiest texture. Allow it to soften to room temperature so it blends easily with the butter and creates a smooth, lump-free frosting.
- ½ cup (1 stick) salted butter, room temperature — Softened butter creates a silky, fluffy base and makes it easier to incorporate the cream cheese. Using unsalted butter allows you to control the overall flavor of the frosting.
- 3 ½ cups powdered sugar — Provides sweetness while giving the frosting enough structure to spread and pipe. Sift the powdered sugar if it has lumps for an extra-smooth finish.
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract — Adds warmth and depth of flavor while complementing the tanginess of the cream cheese.
- 1 tablespoon milk — Helps loosen the frosting to a smooth, spreadable consistency. Add a little more, about ½ teaspoon at a time, if the frosting is too thick. You can also substitute heavy cream for an even richer frosting.
Instructions:
- Beat the cream cheese and butter. In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment, or in a large bowl using a electric mixer, add the softened cream cheese and butter. Beat on medium speed for about 1 minute, or until smooth, creamy, and fully combined. Scrape down the sides of the bowl as needed.
- Add the powdered sugar. Gradually add the powdered sugar, about ½ cup at a time, mixing on low speed after each addition to prevent the sugar from flying out of the bowl. Continue until all of the powdered sugar has been incorporated.
- Add the vanilla and milk. Pour in the vanilla extract and milk. Mix on low speed until the ingredients are combined and the frosting is smooth.
- Whip the frosting. Increase the mixer speed to medium-high and beat for about 5 minutes. This gives the frosting time to become light, fluffy, and creamy. Scrape the sides and bottom of the bowl with a rubber spatula, once or twice during mixing to ensure everything is evenly incorporated.
- Check the consistency. The finished frosting should be thick enough to hold its shape but soft enough to spread easily. If it is too thick, add a small splash of milk or heavy cream. If it is too thin, add a little more powdered sugar until you reach the desired consistency.
- Use or chill. Spread the frosting over completely cooled cakes, cupcakes, cookies, or other baked goods, and easily use a piping bag to decorate. If you’re not using it immediately, cover and refrigerate until ready to use. Let it sit at room temperature for a few minutes and stir briefly before spreading if it has become firm.

Perfect Pairings:
This cream cheese frosting pairs especially well with baked goods that have warm spices, fruit, chocolate, or a hint of sweetness.

- Red velvet cake – The rich frosting complements the subtle cocoa flavor perfectly.

My Favorite Pairings…

- Peach Crisp Cake – Perfect for fall, especially with a sprinkle of cinnamon on top

Tips and Tricks
- Use room-temperature ingredients: Room temperature butter and room temperature cream cheese make all the difference. This helps them blend together smoothly and prevents lumps in the finished frosting.
- Use full-fat cream cheese: Full-fat cream cheese provides the best flavor and texture. Avoid whipped or low-fat varieties, which can make the frosting softer or less stable.
- Sift the powdered sugar: If your powdered sugar is lumpy, sift it before adding it to the frosting. This creates an extra-smooth texture.
- Add the sugar gradually: Mix in the powdered sugar a little at a time to prevent a cloud of sugar and to help the frosting come together evenly.
- Don’t over-soften the butter: The butter should be soft enough to mix easily but should not be melted or greasy. If it’s too warm, the frosting may become too loose.
- Adjust the consistency: If the frosting is too thick, add milk or heavy cream a small amount at a time. If it is too thin, add a little more powdered sugar until it reaches the consistency you want.
- Whip it well: Don’t skip the final whipping step. Beating the frosting for several minutes helps incorporate air and creates a lighter, fluffier texture.
- Scrape the bowl: Pause to scrape down the sides and bottom of the mixing bowl to make sure all of the cream cheese and butter are evenly incorporated.
- Make it ahead: Cream cheese frosting can be prepared ahead of time and stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Let it soften slightly and give it a quick stir before using.
- Keep it cool: Because it contains cream cheese, keep frosted baked goods refrigerated if they will be sitting out for an extended period of time.
- Add extra flavor: For a fun variation, add a pinch of cinnamon, a little lemon zest, or an additional splash of vanilla. These small additions can complement different cakes and baked goods beautifully.
- Frost completely cooled baked goods: Always allow cakes, cupcakes, and other baked goods to cool completely before frosting. Warm baked goods can melt the butter and cause the frosting to slide or become runny.
Summary:
This homemade cream cheese frosting is rich, creamy, fluffy, and incredibly easy to make. Softened cream cheese and butter are whipped together before being combined with powdered sugar, vanilla, and a splash of milk for the perfect consistency. The result is a smooth, tangy-sweet frosting that’s delicious on everything from cakes and cupcakes to cinnamon rolls and cookies.
